Places of Remembrance 1914-1918 > Château-Thierry Monument Hill 204The Monument of the “Cote 204” in Château-Thierry officially named “The American Aisne-Marne Monument” was ordered by the United States to commemorate the fights of the American and French troops in this area during the summer of 1918. Inaugurated in 1937, it is a reminder of the French-American friendship.
Facing west, two high statues holding hands represent France, on the right, wearing a body armor and carrying a shield and, on its left, the United-States carrying a sword. On the East side of the Monument, an impressive American eagle dominates a map showing the American troops’ progression in the region. This Monument was designed by the French-American artist Paul Cret and was financed by the American Battle Monuments Commission chaired by General J. Pershing.
This 62-meter long and 21-meter high Monument dominates the city of Château-Thierry and part of its valley.
